Mum Abigail Mepham, from Gravesend, helping parents who have lost a child

The pain and grief of losing a child is always immeasurable, but one young woman who found solace in an online bereavement group is now using her experience to help others.

Abigail Mepham lost her daughter 14 weeks into her pregnancy in what was termed a missed miscarriage.

Finding it very difficult to cope with her grief, the 21-year-old turned to baby and child-loss support Facebook group Angel Wings.

The help it has given her since has now led to her becoming the organisation’s co-ordinator for Kent.

Abigail, who lives in The Maltings in Gravesend, said Angel Wings is open to anyone who has lost a child, whether parents, grandparents, other relatives or carers.

“When I lost my daughter in March 2013 I didn’t know anyone who had miscarried and was finding it difficult.

“I suffered a lot and wanted to lock myself away. My partner was helping me out but I didn’t want to rely on him because he had lost a daughter too.

“So I was looking on Facebook and found Angel Wings. For anyone who has lost a baby it is very hard to take that first step to talk to someone.

“But no one judges you and everyone knows how you are feeling. I would urge anyone to get in touch.”

Angel Wings is a public group and once a member joins, they are put in contact with private groups suited to their needs.

As a co-ordinator, Abigail is also involved in fundraising and an off-shoot Facebook group, Angel Wings Forever Dressed in Love.

Members transform donated wedding, bridesmaid and prom dresses into clothes, shawls, blankets and even pouches and teddies for babies to be buried in.

Abigail, who is now mum to five-month-old Rebecca, said all donations stay in their local area.

“As well as wanting dresses, we are also looking for people who can knit and sew to help create the clothes. We have an urgent need for seamstresses to help us.

“Angel Wings Forever Dressed in Love has only been going a couple of months but donations have so far been amazing and it’s proving to be such a success.”
