Stacey Mowle Appeal supporters in Gravesend headed to Maidstone to abseil 200ft to raise money

Generous fundraisers have gone to great lengths to help Gravesend youngster Stacey Mowle in her battle against a rare childhood cancer.

But dad Warren, 40, and grandad Bob, 61, were among the brave-hearted who decided to go to great heights for the seven-year-old instead.

The pair were joined by more than 50 Stacey Mowle Appeal supporters, including one dressed as Spiderman, to abseil 200ft off Miller House in Maidstone on Saturday.

Warren, 40, was one of the first to take the plunge, with Bob following close behind.

Bob said: “I was a bit apprehensive and the hardest part was getting over the scaffolding at the top - you were literally dangling in mid air.

“It was a bit of a leap of faith but once past that point it was just as the guys who were facilitating the abseil described and it went well.

“I had never abseiled before in my life nor done anything like it. I thought ‘There’s a challenge for me’, although it was nothing compared to the challenge Stacey has got.

“I just thought if she can do that, then I could do the abseil for her. It was tremendous.”

Among the supporters was Rachael Foster, mum of X Factor favourite Tamera Foster. Stacey is a fan of the Gravesend 16-year-old and the pair met a few weeks ago.

Stacey, of Trafalgar Road, suffers from relapsed neuroblastoma and needs specialist treatment which is neither available in the UK nor funded by the NHS.

Her family and friends set up The Stacey Mowle Appeal to raise the necessary £500,000 and dozens of events have been organised on her behalf, helping to push the campaign total so far to £140,000.

The abseil is expected to raise £5,000 from sponsorship. Bob, who is also from Gravesend, said the family have been overwhelmed by the public response to his granddaughter’s plight.

“It is quite unbelievable and very humbling, and if anybody told me there was no community in Gravesend I would tell them they were lying.

“It restores your faith in human nature. People we have never met in both the locality and farther afield have jumped on board.”

Stacey’s mum, Samantha, 32, was unable to take part in the abseil after Stacey was taken ill with an infection.

She is currently in the Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey and now faces five days of chemotherapy.

Her family hope she will be well enough to return home for her birthday on November 23.

CC Rooms, in Gravesend High Street, is staging another Battle of the Bands to raise money for The Stacey Mowle Appeal.

Girl group Cezelle will be returning to defend their title against other local musicians tonight.

Doors open at 6.30pm. Tickets are £3 in advance on 01474 331213 or £5 on the door.
