Gravesend girls find maggots crawling in Chocolate Weetabix cereal bought at Terry Discount Store

Two young girls got more of a breakfast than they bargained for... when they spotted maggots crawling in their cereal.

Yvonne Read - grandmother of six-year-olds Ella Grix and Chloe Appleford - was disgusted when she saw the creatures in the Chocolate Weetabix she had served the girls.

The 45-year-old, of St Andrew's Court, Gravesend, said it was lucky the youngsters spotted the maggots as she did not have her glasses on at the time.

Miss Read inspected the box and saw the product was within the sell by date of April 10, 2014.

"I couldn't believe that something like that would be in cereal," she said. "They were all just crawling out. My granddaughters ran away from the table when they saw them."

She bought the cereal from Terry Discount Store, High Street, Gravesend.

Shop assistant Anthony Vinoth, 26, said the store sympathised and offered Miss Read a refund.

He said: "We understand it's not fair for her to pay 99p and not getting anything from it, but it's nothing to do with us - it's Weetabix."

The store removed the products from its shelves and returned them to the supplier, Booker cash and carry.

Weetabix is now investigating. A spokesman said: "We were concerned to hear about what Miss Read found and are making arrangements to have the Weetabix analysed.

"We will, of course, conduct a full and thorough investigation."
