A man and woman have been bailed following a fire at a community cafe.

The woman, 29, and man, 30, were arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage and arson on Tuesday, September 6 and bailed until October 20 pending further enquiries.

The cafe in Woodlands Park, off Dashwood Road, Gravesend, went up in flames after a blaze started on the roof.

Police believe the building, in front of a children's play area, was set alight between 6pm on Friday, September 2 and about 1am on Saturday, September 3.

Thames-side fire crews were called out just after 1am and a spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said the building was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived.

Fire crews tackled the blaze until about 4am.

Students from local schools had helped renovate the building which re-opened in October last year after being closed for several years.

In term-time hospitality and business students were set to gain valuable work experience by helping at the cafe.
