Family of Adekemi Olubodun, from Swanscombe, launch GoFundMe appeal for £30,000 to fund specialist cancer treatment

The family of a mum-of-two suffering from kidney cancer are appealing for help to fund alternative treatment.

Adekemi Olubodun, who lives in Swanscombe, was devastated to discover that the disease had spread to her spine and liver, despite having the kidney removed.

Her family now hope that holistic cancer treatment in Malaga, Spain, will provide a cure and has set up a GoFundMe.com appeal page.

They aim to raise £30,000, which will primarily cover 50-year-old Adekemi’s medical expenses during her four-week stay as well as flights for her and a companion to accompany her on the trip.

The treatment itself integrates conventional and alternative medical practices alongside emotional and spiritual support.

Adekemi’s sister Grace Olubodun-Ogunade, 51, said: “The idea behind this treatment path is to provide the most positive experience possible. It has been a rollercoaster for the whole family as we have seen our beloved Adekemi go through so much but we have never lost our faith.

“The trial medication she is presently receiving is quite toxic so we want to give her body and soul a rest and this tailored holistic treatment plan seems to be the perfect tonic."
Grace said the decision to launch their public campaign was not made lightly, but they need to raise the money quickly and efficiently.

"The fundraising website GoFundMe.com allowed us to create a platform to organise the campaign and get the local community involved," added Grace.

"Up until this point even very close friends of the family had no idea that Adekemi has been so unwell. So this news may come as a real shock to some."

More than £13,500 towards the treatment at the Budwig Centre was raised within four weeks.

It was originally intended that Adekemi, who has two daughters aged 22 and 28, would go to another clinic in Mexico but the urgency of the situation was said to have led to the change in venue.

Grace said: "Words cannot describe the impact my sister has had on the lives of her children, her siblings, her wider-family and her friends.

"She is just the most wonderful, loving charismatic person you could ever meet and is always thinking about the needs of others which is why we hope people will have it in their hearts to help her now too.

"We are a strong family and we maintain a strong faith that we will be able celebrate Adekemi’s healing someday but we really need to ask people to help us now."
