No charge for man arrested after Crystal Palace fan Richard Powell died following train station row

A man arrested in connection with the death of a Higham father after a row at a London station will not be prosecuted.

The 21-year-old from south London was arrested in August last year after Richard Powell, 39, died from serious head injuries.

Mr Powell, who ran a plastering firm and featured on the BBC series DIY SOS during a building project in Longfield, became involved in a row on the main concourse at Victoria station.

It is believed the Crystal Palace fan was returning from a pre-season friendly when trouble flared. He died three days later at St Thomas’ Hospital, London.

The man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. He has now been told he will not be charged.

A spokesman for British Transport Police, which held an appeal for information at the station in September, said the Crown Prosecution Service had decided no action would be taken.

An inquest into Mr Powell’s death is expected to be held in London at a later date.
