Accident fears prompt calls for one-way system in Whitehill Road, Gravesend

A travel agent has started a petition to make the roads in her area one-way amid fears for pedestrians’ safety.

Melanie Weston, 45, who has lived in Whitehill Road, Gravesend, for 10 years, started the Kent County Council (KCC) online petition after getting fed up with dangerous driving and congestion.

The petition calls for Whitehill Road and Sun Lane to become one-way, although not specifically detailing which way the route would take.

Melanie said: “I’m trying to be pro-active because I can see it is not going to be long before someone gets hit, injured, knocked down or run over.

“There’s been about five or six parked cars that have been written off due to the speed that people come down this road. One of my neighbours has had their car hit three times.”

She said there had been a stand-off with buses and lorries.

“There was an incident a couple of months ago when a bus and a lorry were heading towards each other and not budging,” she said.

“They got out of their vehicles and there was a lot of screaming and shouting.

“It’s an ongoing problem, there’s not enough room.”

She added: “The route is a decision for the council to make, not me. When there has been road maintenance, the traffic was changed to one-way and people drove down Whitehill Road starting from The Echo pub and then the other way down Sun Lane.

“At rush hour, the road becomes gridlocked.

“Drop-off times at Whitehill Primary and St Joseph’s causes excess traffic on both roads.

“It would just make sense to make Whitehill Road and Sun Lane a one-way system.”

Cllr Michael Wenban, who lives in Whitehill Road and had his parked car damaged by a passing vehicle, sees the positives of a one-way system.

He said: “The more I think about it, I would say it’s a good idea. It’s got its advantages and disadvantages.

“If we are going to do this we need no parking restrictions to stay. If you put yellow lines down it would become a racing track. Parked cars make it safe.

“It’s becoming more of a dangerous road.”
