Zdenek Samko and Jan Gulas killed on A2 after getting out to push broken down car

Two men were killed on the A2 after the car they were travelling in broke down and they got out to push.

An inquest opened at Maidstone's Archbishop's Palace heard Zdenek Samko and Jan Gulas were driving Londonbound on Saturday, March 10, at around 11pm when the white Volkswagen Golf broke down between the Ebbsfleet and Bean turn offs.

The car stopped in lane four of four and 36-year-old Mr Samko and Mr Gulas, 21, along with a third person got out to push.

A black Volkswagen Polo then struck their vehicle from behind and despite the efforts of the emergency services both men later died at the scene.

Four other people sustained non-life threatening injuries. The road was shut for nine hours leading to severe delays in the area.

Police are still keen to speak to people who may have dash cam footage of the white VW Golf before the crash.

Mr Samko, of Gravesend, was married while Mr Gulas lived in the town's High Street and was listed as being single. Both worked as cleaners.

A post-mortem carried out on March 22 gave the causes of death for both men as multiple injuries.

Both inquests were adjourned and initially listed to resume on June 6 but coroner for North West Kent Roger Hatch has taken the decision to delay Mr Samko's due to the ongoing police investigation. Mr Gulas' may also be rescheduled.
