Pelham Arms pub in Gravesend taped off by police after suspicious fire

Shocking CCTV footage has emerged of the moment an arsonist set fire to the outside of a pub.

The attacker targeted the Pelham Arms, in Old Road West, just before 5am.

In the clip the hooded suspect can be seen pouring an accelerant around the front entrance to the historic ale house before lighting a rag.

The pub was cordoned off for most of the morning, with forensics officers combing the scene.

Land lady Linda Wells posted the clip online, saying: "An unprovoked attack on our business, family and home. This person needs to be caught before someone is killed.

"Luckily we have escaped with minor damage. Any information please contact Kent Police or message me. Any information will be dealt with in confidence."

Speaking to the Messenger she said the arsonist poured petrol around the front of the building before setting the blaze.

She added she had no idea why anyone would target the business but added it was open as usual today.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called at 5.08am on Thursday 25 January to a report of a fire at a property in Old Road West, Gravesend.

"Officers attended alongside the Kent Fire and Rescue Service. The fire is currently being treated as suspicious.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

A fire service spokesman added: "We were called at 4.56am to Old Road West, Gravesend to reports of a fire outside a property.

"Crews used a high pressure hose reel, lighting and thermal imaging camera to tackle the fire.

"Kent Police also attended and the fire is currently being treated as suspicious."
