Washing machine fire in Singlewell Road, Gravesend

Fire crews were called to extinguish a washing machine that had set alight.

The appliance burst into flames before causing smoke damage to the kitchen. Three people were evacuated from the home in Singlewell Road in Gravesend.

Two fire engines were called to the scene at around 6.40pm last night.

No one was injured.

Firefighters isolated the electrics before using a hose reel to put out the fire.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "This sends a clear message about the dangers of leaving your washing machine on overnight."
