Northfleet the unlikely backdrop for opening stunt sequence in Marvel's Doctor Strange

Marvel's latest superhero blockbuster hits UK cinemas today and a Kent town is the unlikely backdrop for one of its opening stunt sequences.

Doctor Strange tells the story of neurosurgeon Stephen Strange, who is injured in a car accident that ruins his career and sets out on a journey of healing that sees him protecting the world from inter-dimensional threats.

The car accident which prompts his transformation was filmed in Northfleet, with the industrial shoreline used to stage an elaborate stunt sequence at the beginning of the film where Benedict Cumberbatch's character loses control of his car.

Also starring American actress Rachel McAdams, former Bond villain Mads Mikkelsen, and Tilda Swinton, Doctor Strange is expected to be another box office hit and has already received positive reviews from critics.

The borough of Gravesham will be seen again on the big screen next year, with Gemma Arterton and Dominic Cooper having been seen shooting their new film, The Escape, in Ebbsfleet, Gravesend and Swanscombe over the past few weeks.
