Suspect letter raises alarm at primary school

THE alarm was raised at a North Kent school on Thursday morning after a letter arrived in the post leaking white powder.

Police were called at around 10.30am to Craylands Primary School, Craylands Lane, Swanscombe following the discovery of the suspect letter.

The envelope, which arrived in the post, appeared to be leaking a white powder.

As a precaution everyone who had been in contact with it remained in isolation until the emergency services arrived.

A police cordon was put in place for two hours. Children were not evacuated from the school and suffered little disruption as a result of the incident. No-one was injured.

A chemical unit from Kent Fire and Rescue Service inspected the letter and found it to be harmless. It is believed the letter had been in a post box, which was set alight and the powder was from the extinguisher used to put the fire out.
