Suspected arson at nine-storey Gravesend block of flats

A fire at a Gravesend block of flats is being investigated as a suspected arson.

Six crews with a total of 30 firemen were called to put out the flames in Home Mead Close at about 12.50am this morning (Friday).

They managed to contain the fire within one flat on the fifth floor of the nine-storey building, which suffered only minor damage but was heavily smoke-logged.

Residents had managed to get out of the block by the time firefighters arrived and no-one was injured. Crews left at about 1.45am.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but police have arrested one man in connection with it.
