Gravesend firefighters called to tackle fire in underground car park

Smoke was seen coming from an underground car park in Gravesend.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service received reports at 6.34pm and sent three fire engines to The Maltings, Clifton Road, due to concerns there may be homeless people in the area.

Fortunately, there was no one present and crews wearing breathing apparatus were able to extinguish the fire.

It was a pile of rubbish in the car park, under several flats which had caught fire.

The fire was put out by 7.28pm but crews are still at the scene damping down the area and clearing the fumes.
