Disruptive fans delay trains following Ebbsfleet v Bromley match

Several vehicles and windows were smashed in Northfleet as vandals – thought to be football fans – left a trail of destruction.

There were reports of damage to cars in Station Road, Hamerton Road and Railway Street on Tuesday evening after Ebbsfleet’s home game against Bromley.

Earlier, Bromley had won 1-0 at Ebbsfleet’s Stonebridge Road ground in a game that saw the visitors return to the top of Vanarama Conference South.

It is believed away fans caused trouble on their way back to Northfleet Railway Station, smashing up cars, windows in homes and businesses, and making threats.

Stephanie Abbitt, 41, of Hamerton Road, Northfleet, was at home with her five-year-old son Logan and three-year-old son, Noah.

She said: “The noise they were making was just unbelievable, they were just roaring down the road. It was horrible, I was really scared, we didn’t know what they were going to do. He was really scared.

“Never in five years of living here have we had so much trouble. We have had no problems from the football ground at all.”

One resident in Station Road said he saw lots of police parked up in Northfleet and another, who has lived in the road for 16 years, said she had never seen such chaos.

A woman who lives in Hamerton Road, who also did not wish to be named, said she had been told by a police officer that more than 20 cars had been damaged.

Somebody had also knocked on her door before disappearing.

Trains through Ebbsfleet were also delayed with ‘disruptive’ passengers – also thought to be football fans – being blamed.

Rail operator Southeastern said fans ‘were being a little silly’, leading to disruption on services.

In a statement released today, Ebbsfleet United Football Club strongly condemned "the behaviour of an element of visiting supporters at last night’s home game."

The club is carrying out a full assessment of the damage caused, working with police and local residents.

Ebbsfleet vice-chairman Peter Varney issued a statement, saying: “Significant damage was done to the Stonebridge Road stadium last night by so-called Bromley supporters and a number of Ebbsfleet supporters and stewards were attacked.

"In addition, cars in the main car park were damaged and glass was deliberately smashed underneath car wheels.

"There were a number of Bromley supporters ejected during the match. After the match, cars owned by local residents were also damaged.

“We have a lot of photgraphic evidence and will be working with Bromley FC and the Police to ensure these thugs are dealt with through the Courts.”

A spokesman for Kent Police said that they are carrying out inquiries into the incident. Officers arrived at the scene at 10pm.
