Work on the £19 million railway station in Gravesend is due to finish on Monday

Work on the new-look £19 million railway station in Gravesend is due to finish on Monday.

The station closed its doors on December 22 and almost immediately, workers poured onto the tracks and began work on installing a new platform.

All lines in and out of the station have been closed and Rathmore Road, running alongside the station, was closed and turned into a makeshift village for the workers.

Rathmore Road will remain closed until Monday, January 13.

The station’s newly fitted extended platform will allow longer, 12-car trains to stop at Gravesend.

Network Rail said the change would provide up to 3,500 extra seats and more space for passengers.

It adds to the new footbridge, which now comes with lifts. The old listed bridge, thought to be about 150 years old, was removed weeks earlier and given to a conservation group.

An additional platform in the centre of the tracks is also being fitted.

Until Monday, a replacement bus service will run between Greenhithe and Gravesend through to Strood.

High-speed trains to and from London St Pancras International will terminate at Ebbsfleet International. Buses will run between Ebbsfleet International and Strood.

Trains between London Victoria and Ramsgate will call additionally at Meopham.

Southeastern’s customer relations manager Alison Nolan said: “The work at Gravesend is critical for us to be able to increase capacity and run longer trains on the network, but we know the work to make this happen will result in some inconvenience for our passengers.

“We’ve spent a great deal of time working together with Network Rail, Transport for London and local bus operators to develop a range of alternative travel arrangements for customers during this time.”
