James Bond star Gemma Arterton and Mamma Mia's Dominic Cooper start filming The Escape in Gravesend

If you go down to Gravesend today, you could be in for a big surprise.

Hollywood star Gemma Arterton has returned to her hometown to shoot her latest film - The Escape - and the former Gravesend Grammar School for Girls student is joined by Mamma Mia favourite Dominic Cooper.

Both actors have been documenting the shoot on Twitter and Instagram since it got underway on Monday, with the pair snapping pictures of their travels through Ebbsfleet International and Gravesend Pier.

Gemma, who also trained at the Miskin Theatre in Dartford, co-wrote the film's script and is acting as producer for Shoebox Films.

Aiming to highlight “the largely undiscussed phenomenon of women forced to leave their children and families”, The Escape will be shooting in and around Gravesend before heading over to Paris.

Directed by Dominic Savage, principal photography is only expected to take a few weeks, although a release date has not yet been said.

Gemma said of the film: “The Escape will be an exploration of marriage and motherhood. It is frank, honest and unapologetically from the woman’s point of view. It will be extremely personal.

“I look forward to embarking on it, surrounded by people I trust and who understand the intention, and to digging deep and finding truth.”

The Escape is the latest in a string of lower budget ventures for the former Bond girl, who can currently be seen in UK cinemas in zombie drama The Girl With All the Gifts.
