Scores of people will wrap up warm for a festive ramble in aid of ellenor this weekend.

Family, friends and some dogs too will stroll through Jeskyns Community Woodland, Cobham, on Sunday.

Ellenor is the only charitable service in the county to provide end-of-life, cancer and respite care to people of all ages in its hospice at Northfleet or in the comfort of their own home.

Events fundraiser Emma Bowles said: “We are delighted to be hosting the Winter Walk at a new venue this year.

"With its beautiful landscape and family centric atmosphere, Jeskyns is the perfect spot for our festive walk, and we look forward to welcoming friends and families from across Kent.

"Last year we welcomed over 200 people to the event raising £3,906.16 – which was just incredible. Hopefully 2017 will be even bigger."

All walkers will receive a Santa hat before they are sent off on the trail at 10am with the option to walk or run the 5km through the wintery woodland.

The course will be a mixture of gravel and grass surfaced paths and will be signed throughout with marshals at every 1km marker.

One of those supporting the event is Levi Manwaring’s mother, Victoria. She said: “Even at the end of Levi’s life I could never ask for the most perfect, kind-hearted nurses to care for my son.

"We are doing this walk as we wanted to say thank you and raise some money so ellenorcan continue carrying on with all their hard work."

Others raising money for ellenor are the Matthews family, who have swamped their front garden with decorations for the second year running to raise money for the hospice.

Inflatables, lights, candy canes and a layer of fake snow are just some of the festive ornaments Paul and Lisa Matthews have erected outside their home in of Romney Road, Gravesend, to fund raise for hospice charity ellenor.

The couple, who raised £500 for the charity last year, started collecting money after a friend suggested they put their seasonal spectacular to good use.

Lisa, 51, a senior health care nurse, along with Paul, 53, a refinery inspector, picked the charity after ellenor looked after her nan, Nancy Boag, five years ago after she was diagnosed with cancer.

Lisa said: “We started doing the lights when our first grandchildren came along about eight years ago and it’s sort of grown and grown every year.

“We had people ask us last year if we did it for charity and having dealings with ellenor on a personal level, we decided to go with them.

“The response was amazing.

“We had so many people try and climb in the garden and take a picture with the lights and inflatables.”

She added: “The whole point of it was to see the happiness in the kids’ faces.

“It’s worth it when you’re sitting here and you can hear the wonder and wows.

“I dread to think how much it’s all cost. It’s £100 a month with the electricity but it’s worth it.

“It’s not about the money it’s more that we can give something back to a really worthwhile charity.

“I’m still trying to get Paul to put the decorations on the roof.

“We have so many decorations, that no two years will be the same.

“The other week I had a little boy who only had 20p. He asked if it was ok to give that.”
