Ebbsfleet United winger Sean Shields on his two goals against FC Halifax Town

Ebbsfleet matchwinner Sean Shields has revealed how he beat the opposition at their own game on Saturday.

Shields came on for the injured Andy Drury late in the first half and scored both goals as Fleet beat FC Halifax 2-0 to make it back-to-back wins in the National League.

The winger was quick to pull the trigger on both occasions and after the game he explained why.

Shields said: "Funnily enough, working on Halifax this week in training, we were looking to stop their left winger (Matty Kosylo) because he’s a very bright player.

"I was almost mimicking him in some of the defending drills. I was working on coming in and shooting because that’s how he likes to play.

"When I came on today, the first time I got the ball, that was my first thought - drive in onto my right, shoot and the next time I got it out on the right, I like to think I’m comfortable on both feet and I did the same. Thankfully it paid off."

A substitute in Ebbsfleet's first seven games of the season, Shields was handed his first start against Eastleigh on September 2 but just a week later he pulled a stomach muscle delivering a cross away to Chester.

He missed the next three games but looked like he'd never been away on Saturday.

"It was quite frustrating for me because I’d broken into the team against Eastleigh at home, thought I did pretty well and Chester away I thought I did OK, could have done a bit better but obviously got injured.

"When you’ve waited so long to break into the team and you're training hard, that’s not the setback you need but it is part and parcel of football.

"The last couple of weeks I’ve remained focused to make sure I come back in as sharp as possible.

"Sometimes you can come back and be a little bit jaded or not quite up to the pace but even though I had a stomach injury, I was still doing a lot of running with Jay and Lew (physios Jamie Crosswell and Lewis Hards) so I was keeping myself ticking over and I felt great coming back in this week and ready to go.

"If I hadn’t come back as fit as I had, I probably wouldn’t have had that impact today. I’m pleased I did and I’m pleased it helped the team."

Shields' goals helped Fleet climb to 12th in the National League.

They drew nine of their first 11 games but have only lost once all season and are now just four points off the play-offs ahead of Tuesday's trip to Solihull Moors.

Shields said: "I was there watching at Boreham Wood last week and the first half wasn’t really us.

"The gaffer touched on that at half-time and the second half performance was a massive improvement. We looked solid and we were breaking well - it was almost the ideal away performance.

"We know how strong we are at home so we target three points from all home games.

"To get back-to-back wins in this league is huge for us because we want to push on again on Tuesday, next Saturday, keep going, then who knows where we could end up?"
