Ebbsfleet United's new manager Jamie Day hoping to lead the club into the Football League after leaving Welling United

Jamie Day can see exciting times ahead for Ebbsfleet after this week leaving Welling to become their new manager.

The 35-year-old succeeds Steve Brown at the PHB Stadium and he’s been tasked with leading Fleet into the Vanarama Conference.

And with promotion to the Football League the Fleet’s ultimate aim, Day admitted that ending his five-year spell in charge of the Wings to take the helm in north Kent wasn’t a difficult decision.

He said: "These are exciting times at Ebbsfleet – if I get it right. My job is to take this club forward to where they want to be.

"They told me about the plans they’ve got to take the club into the Football League. We’re two divisions away from that at the moment but if I get it right, these are exciting times. They’ve got the potential to be a League club and that’s what brought me to it.

"We’ve got to get out of Conference South first and that’s not easy at all but it’s my job to do it."

Day led Welling to the Conference South title in 2012-13, his third full season in management. Wings finished 16th in the Conference last season and were 17th after his final game in charge, a 2-1 win at AFC Telford on Tuesday night.

He said: "It does help that I’ve won this league before. I’ve probably got an advantage of having been in the level above as well, so I know players from both levels and below.

"I’ve looked at the squad and it’s a good squad of players, good enough to get out of this league – maybe adding one or two to that and getting one or two per cent more out of the boys who are here now to get us over the line.

Day will watch from the stands when Ebbsfleet host Welling in the FA Trophy on Saturday.

He said: “We agreed to leave this weekend, in the best interests of everyone. I’ll start at training on Monday and we’ll prepare for Weston-super-Mare (on December 20).

"It would be difficult to manage Welling or Ebbsfleet on Saturday, so it’s best to watch from afar. It would be an awkward situation for me and the staff."
