Ebbsfleet United midfielder Andy Drury on his goal against Barrow AFC

Andy Drury is feeling the benefit of not rushing back from injury.

The Ebbsfleet midfielder recently sat out three games with a tight calf but was back in the side against East Thurrock last Tuesday, scoring the opener as Fleet won their FA Cup replay 3-0.

And fit-again Drury was back on the goal trail at the weekend, netting the second as Daryl McMahon's side beat Barrow 3-2 in the National League.

Drury said: "I had a couple of weeks out with my calf injury and I didn’t rush back.

"When I was younger I'd maybe have played when it was still tight and then I might have done it again.

"But I waited an extra two or three days and I was 100% for one of the first times this season. It’s nice to get a couple of goals and to get three points and another win in the FA Cup, it’s happy days."

Fleet had just been pegged back by Barrow when Drury struck to make it 2-1 from close-range after goalkeeper Joel Dixon had spilled a Jack Powell shot.

"I just followed it in," he said. "That’s what they teach you when you’re a kid.

"I passed it to Powelly and I thought he was going to shoot so I followed it through and luckily it fell to me."

Ebbsfleet have been without the injured Jack Payne for several weeks but in his absence, Drury and Dean Rance have formed an excellent partnership in central midfield.

Drury said: "Me and Rancey work well together. We’re different types of players but we compliment each other well.

"We’re starting to get more of a settled side now barring one or two positions and that’s paying dividends."

He added: "We’re more solid as a team now. Maybe earlier in the season we’d have conceded three or four but even though the goals we conceded weren’t very good, it was good to get the three points in these conditions.

"The way they were playing made it even harder. There were spells when we played decent football and carved them open but it’s very difficult to do that in these conditions.

"It’s very difficult in the air. It was so windy out there but we got the ball down in spells and it was nice. We were never going to be able to play the way we want to for 90 minutes."

Ebbsfleet are at home to second-bottom Torquay on Tuesday night.
