Ebbsfleet United's hunt for a new manager has started - and it's not expected to last long.

Since the Fleet sacked Jamie Day last week, they've received more than 100 applications to succeed him.

The season finished on Saturday but just because Ebbsfleet don't have a game coming up, it doesn't mean they'll be taking their time when it comes to appointing a new boss.

Vice-chairman Peter Varney said: "The problem we’ve got is that players start going on holiday and it’s important the new manager gets to sit down with the players. He’ll have his ideas about who he wants to keep and who he wants to bring in.

"You can’t keep changing the squad every few months but the new manager will give us his assessment of the squad.

"We want a good motivator, a good coach, someone who’s got the respect of the players and who’s going to make sure we’re at the right level of fitness – particularly as we train full-time.

"We’re offering the players things which should make them better technically."

Managers both in and out of work are among the 100 bidding to take over from Day.

Mr Varney said: "Those numbers are astonishing.

"I'm really surprised we've had that many applicants but on the other hand, we're a club with ambition and we're prepared to back the manager.

"It's a struggle at some clubs and you have to work by selling players but it won't be like that for our new manager."
