Ebbsfleet United forward Corey Whitely enjoying free role under boss Daryl McMahon

Corey Whitely is relishing the freedom he’s been given at Ebbsfleet.

The 26-year-old has scored two goals in four games since joining from Dagenham & Redbridge in February.

Whitely looks a class act and manager Daryl McMahon seems to be getting the best out of his new signing.

He said: “The gaffer said, before I came, he was going to give me a lot of freedom. I can’t complain about that.

“I don’t like being restricted to doing one thing. I like to get on the ball, roam about a bit and he gave me the green light to be free.

“I knew about Ebbsfleet before I came here. I’ve played against them a few times, I like the way they play, the way the team’s set up.

“The club’s really positive and has got a great future ahead. I like the manager, he’s young and enthusiastic and he gets behind me.”

Dagenham rejected offers for Whitely in January but things changed when former director Glyn Hopkin stopped funding the club.

London-based Whitely said: “I got offers from other clubs but it was more of a location thing. I didn’t want to travel too far.

“Ebbsfleet gave me a ring and it was a perfect opportunity, not too far from where I live, so I couldn’t turn it down.

“Dagenham gave me a lot. They set the platform for me to come from a low level into the National League.

“I hope they get their finances sorted and that everything goes well with them.”

Whitely has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract so where does he see Fleet going in that time?

“Upwards,” he said. “The club’s got goals they want to achieve and everyone’s on board for doing that.”
