Former Charlton Athletic and Wycombe Wanderers defender Grant Basey leaves Ebbsfleet United to consider his long-term future

Grant Basey has left Ebbsfleet United and the former Charlton defender has announced he is taking time out from the game to re-evaluate his career.

The 24-year-old has barely played for the Fleet since joining the club on a non-contract basis in September.

Basey started their Kent Senior Cup tie at Sittingbourne on October 1 but during the first-half he suffered a recurrence of the cruciate knee ligament injury which kept him sidelined for much of last season at Wycombe Wanderers.

Fleet boss Steve Brown said at the time: "It's tough to come back from that injury twice. It's definitely doable, especially in the modern day, but the lad's crestfallen."

He ruptured the ligament in Wycombe training last September and the Chairboys subsequently released him in May.

Basey was out for four weeks before returning to the Fleet squad as an unused substitute in their FA Cup defeat at Dartford.

He played against Tunbridge Wells in the Kent Senior Cup on November 19 but that proved to be his last appearance for Ebbsfleet.

Brown said: "Grant came to us with every intention of regaining full fitness to push for a contract and a starting place.

"Grant’s attitude has been first-class but he’s decided to take time out to think about his long-term future.

"We all wish him well and he knows he is welcome here at Stonebridge Road should he want to come back."
