Commonwealth Games: Georgia-Mae Fenton wants to do her family proud in Australia

Georgia-Mae Fenton is hoping to deliver her Mum Lisa the perfect birthday present all the way from the Gold Coast.

The 17-year-old from Gravesend is making her Commonwealth debut after being named in England's 12-strong gymnastics squad.

She's heading Down Under with high hopes and an open mind - but one particular date circled on the calendar.

Fenton said: "I know the bars final is on April 8 because it's my Mum's birthday. To medal on bars would be amazing.

"A team medal would be amazing and our team is very capable of doing that. I'd be happy to making some finals on any apparatus - mainly bars!

"To be in the squad is absolutely amazing. It's one of the competitions I've wanted to tick off my list so to be able to say I'm going is overwhelming.

"It's one of the top four majors and it's a great honour to be able to represent England."

Fenton is joined in the England squad by, among others, double Olympic champion Max Whitlock.

They were two of seven medals Great Britain won in the sport at Rio de Janeiro and Fenton said: "Gymnastics is growing. It's great to be part of it while that's happening.

"To look up to people who have been there and done it but are still carrying on and pushing the sport forward, having them around to train with, it lifts you up as well."

Fenton, who now trains at East London Gymnastics Centre, first got into the sport at the Meapa Gymnastic Club in Gravesend.

She said: "I was quite a hyperactive child, always doing cartwheels at home so my Mum told me to do it in an actual gym where I'd be safe and it took off from there.

"Gymnastics basically takes up all of my time but it's worth it, to travel round the world, representing your country.

"School is probably the main sacrifice but I still manage to go to college once a week and I'm doing well there. I passed all my GCSEs.

"We miss out on all the parties and going out with friends but for me, it's worth it.

"I'd much rather be doing what I'm doing. I'll have time for that stuff afterwards."
