Ebbsfleet United boss Daryl McMahon on the 1-0 defeat to Chester

Ebbsfleet's home defeat to Chester on Saturday underlined the need for manager Daryl McMahon to add to his attacking options in January.

Fleet dominated possession but didn't work Blues keeper Sam Hornby enough and were beaten by a sloppy goal midway through the first half.

It's now three National League games without a win for McMahon's side.

He said: "We had a lot of good possession and haven't done enough with it. It's probably an area of the pitch we do need to get somebody else in, which we know about, but at the minute we're drawing a blank on that so we'll keep going with what we've got.

"We didn't get too many of our quick combinations, which we normally do, in that little area between Coulson, Powell, Kedwell etc. We didn't do enough with the ball we had but there were lots of good bits in that game.

"It's a rubbish goal for us to concede that cost us the points. They had one shot in the second half and that goal, which we've gifted them.

"Chester didn't really come here to get anything. They played four central midfield players, they were tight, compact, worked really hard to be fair to them, which they would do down the bottom of the table and it's a great three points for them.

"But from my perspective, we've got to do a bit more."

Fleet had 15 attempts on goal to Chester's six but they ran out of ideas in the second half.

"I'd love to see the possession stats," McMahon said. "We've got to be high seventies or eighties in terms of having the ball and we played some nice stuff but didn't penetrate enough.

"The goal we conceded was Sunday League. You can't give a team a goal like that when we're so dominant. It gives them a head start and it's a struggle from there because it galvanises them and gives them something to cling on to.

"They don't have to come out, they didn't come out and we've got to be better in the final third.

"It's just bad defending for their goal. We've got good players in our defence and in goal but at the minute, it's not good enough. We've got to sort it out very quickly.

"In general play, I thought we were good, we moved the ball well and it was good to get Paynie back who I thought was excellent when he came on. Shieldsy had a decent game and Weston did all right but all right's not enough.

"We need to win some games and it's a great game to bounce back in on Tuesday."
