Charlton Athletic 0 Shrewsbury Town 1 match report

Charlton Athletic have it all to do in the second leg of their League 1 play-off semi-final after losing the first tie at home to Shrewsbury Town.

Jon Nolan’s spectacular effort from 18 yards in the second half was enough to give his side the 1-0 win at The Valley on Thursday night.

A crowd of more than 14,000 fans in strong voice all evening was not enough to spur the Addicks on to get that all important goal.

They were frustrated by Shrewsbury who slowed the game down at every opportunity and were good value for their lead by the end of the match.

Charlton had a flurry of early chances to put themselves ahead, spurred on by a home crowd in good voice from the first minute, and came close.

Stephy Mavididi flashed a cross across the face of goal missing everyone in the fourth minute. When the ball came back in Josh Magennis got his head to the ball but it went the wrong side of the post.

From a Charlton corner, Shrewsbury broke away on the counter attack and forced Ben Amos into making an outstanding save. Jon Nolan turned his defender and got the shot away but it was saved.

Bryn Morris forced a good save from Amos after 29 minutes when he found space on the edge of the box to get his shot away. It was a comfortable height for the Charlton goalkeeper and pushed wide for a corner.

The Addicks finished the first-half like they started it. They put Shrewsbury under pressure but failed to force Dean Henderson into making a save.

Shrewsbury frustrated Charlton in the opening 20 minutes of the second half, slowing the game down whenever possible.

The first real chance of the half came from a Shrewsbury free-kick in a dangerous position in the 67th minute. It was passed to Nolan on the edge of the box, who was unmarked, but his side-footed shot missed the target.

Jake Forster-Caskey should have made Henderson work harder from a free-kick 20 yards out in the 72nd minute. Tariqe Fosu won the free-kick after turning his man and the resulting free-kick was well placed for a shot on goal but the effort was straight at the goalkeeper.

Jon Nolan gave the visitors the lead after 80 minutes with a spectacular effort from just inside the box.

The teams were nearly level just two minutes later when Nicky Ajose tried his own volley from the same distance but was just over the bar.
