Ebbsfleet United 2 Bromley 1 match report

Ebbsfleet climbed to within two points of the National League play-offs with victory over local rivals Bromley on Boxing Day.

Jack Powell and Danny Kedwell scored the goals which earned Fleet a fifth straight home win and lifted them above the Ravens in the race for promotion.

Bromley, who were briefly level through Louis Dennis, huffed and puffed in the second half but Daryl McMahon's side never let them build up a head of steam.

Ebbsfleet were unchanged from their 1-1 draw at AFC Fylde while the visitors, who held leaders Macclesfield on Saturday, brought in Frankie Raymond and Dennis for Frankie Sutherland and Brett Williams.

Bromley threatened early when Dean Rance failed to clear Dennis' cross from the left and Josh Rees saw a shot charged down.

At the other end, Luke Coulson cut inside and thumped a shot straight at Ravens captain Jack Holland.

Fleet were passing the ball crisply but the visitors looked dangerous every time they went forward and Luke Wanadio forced a low save from Nathan Ashmore after running at Fleet left-back Jack Connors.

But it was the home side who broke the deadlock on 13 minutes. Kedwell chested the ball down for Powell and his first-time volley, although not the most powerful, was perfectly placed and crept inside the left-hand post despite David Gregory's sprawling dive.

Five minutes later, Bromley were level, George Porter getting the better of Connors and squaring for Dennis to slide the ball low across Ashmore.

Back came Fleet, with Coulson rattling the crossbar after Myles Weston had crossed from the right, although livewire Dennis showed good feet to elude two Fleet players and curl a shot wide.

However, a superb drop of the shoulder by Coulson opened the door for Ebbsfleet to retake the lead just before the half hour. Coulson left his man for dead and rolled the ball into the six-yard box, where Kedwell was waiting to pounce.

An entertaining first half finished with a chance at either end. Coulson collected the ball from Powell and swirled a right-footed shot across the face of goal, before Dennis saw his effort deflect just past the post after more good Bromley build-up.

Connors was replaced by Marvin McCoy at half-time with Sam Magri switching to left-back.

Wanadio lashed a shot over when Dennis' left-wing cross dropped at his feet but Ebbsfleet then went close to doubling their lead.

Weston's deep free-kick eventually ran for Coulson, who thumped another striker against the crossbar before centre-half Dave Winfield hooked an acrobatic volley over from close-range.

Gregory saved low to his right when Drury hit a firm shot from 25 yards but the home side received a let-off when Rance shanked the ball in midfield and Dennis poked a first-time shot well wide.

Neil Smith sent on a second striker, Brett Williams, for the last half-an-hour but Ebbsfleet did well to take the sting out of the game as Bromley became increasingly frustrated.

Kedwell was absolutely tireless up front, holding the ball up superbly, as well as tracking back to help his defence out when the visitors got men forward.

Williams thought he'd equalised with a header at the far post but Ashmore pulled off a stunning save to push the ball behind.

Jordan Higgs then had his name taken after deliberately scything down Coulson as he broke at pace.

Dennis drove a late shot just wide as Bromley threw bodies forward and the same player had a free-kick saved by Ashmore in the dying stages.

Stewards moved into the away end after Ashmore reported an incident during eight minutes of stoppage-time, which finished with Dennis slicing a shot wide from a good position.
