Ebbsfleet United 2 Woking 1 match report

Two goals from Danny Kedwell fired Ebbsfleet to their third straight win in the National League.

Kedwell had gone 11 games without scoring - a run stretching back to Boxing Day - but he struck either side of half-time to sink Woking and edge Fleet closer to the play-offs.

Woking pulled a goal back but gave Fleet very few problems after that as Daryl McMahon's side did a thoroughly professional job on their visitors from Surrey.

Corey Whitely started for the first time since joining from Dagenham, replacing Myles Weston in one of two Ebbsfleet changes from the 2-1 win at Halifax on Saturday. Injury ruled out Lawrie Wilson so Jack Connors got a game at left-back with Sam Magri switching to the right-hand side of defence.

Fleet winger Anthony Cook, on loan at Woking, was ineligible for this game and watched from the stands while new signing Louie Theophanous started the evening on the bench.

Whitely was straight into the action down the right, seeing lots of the ball and linking well with Kedwell.

Andy Drury hit the post with a shot from outside the box after Luke Coulson had laid Magri's cross into his path, then Whitely cut inside and dragged a left-footed shot past the post.

A couple of tasty challenges in midfield saw Dean Rance and Chez Isaac go into referee Alan Young's notebook before Jack Payne had a shot blocked.

Woking were neat and tidy in possession but Ebbsfleet carried more threat going forward, with Kedwell supported well by Whitely, Coulson and Rance.

Whitely had an effort shave the post and when the ball was returned into the box, Rance tried an overhead kick which flew wide.

But as the first half wore on, Woking started to grow in confidence and they almost took the lead when Josh Staunton's deflected strike came back off the post. Only a desperate block prevented Jonny Edwards knocking in the rebound.

Magri did well to clear his lines after Reece Grego-Cox went close to converting a dangerous cross from the right but Fleet took the lead four minutes before half-time.

The Cards failed to clear a bouncing ball, Magri nipped in and when Jason Banton caught him, Mr Young pointed straight to the spot. Woking manager Jason Limbrick was furious with the decision and remonstrated with the fourth official but Kedwell kept his cool after a delay to smash the spot-kick low past Baxter.

Moments later Kedwell brought down a diagonal ball and thumped a shot goalwards, forcing a super save from Baxter, before he glanced a header narrowly wide from a corner.

Ebbsfleet started the second half as they'd finished the first - with a goal.

Kedwell showed great strength to hold off his man, spin and hit a shot which was carried beyond Baxter by a big deflection.

Woking looked to respond and Grego-Cox fired a snapshot wide before Limbrick sent on two of his substitutes, one of whom quickly halved the deficit. Fleet's marking from a left-wing cross could perhaps have been tighter but take nothing away from Charlie Carter's towering header which dropped inside the left-hand post at the Plough End.

The visitors looked to be turning the screw, pressing Fleet back, but the home side did well to take the sting out of the game.

Jack Powell, on for the injured Payne, fired a shot well over after a positive run down the left by Whitely, who then combined well with another substitute, Sean Shields, on the counter-attack following a Woking corner.

Ebbsfleet managed the game well, starving the Cards of possession and Limbrick started to lose his cool on the touchline. In the end, Mr Young came over and lectured him to the mirth of the home supporters.

Four added minutes at the end of the game passed without incident as Fleet sealed a win which moves them to within two points of the top seven.
