Heavy rain forces Ebbsfleet United manager Steve Brown to cancel midweek training session

Even though they didn’t have a game on Tuesday, Ebbsfleet United fell foul of the bad weather as heavy rain left their training ground at the Beaverwood Club in Chislehurst waterlogged.

The ground staff at Stonebridge Road advised boss Steve Brown against training on the saturated first-team pitch and, with no other venues available at short notice, the manager had to cancel the session.

Brown said: "This is going to happen increasingly as the winter closes in. At the pro level they have enough facilities to cope, but there’s nowhere for us to go."

The cancelled session might have been a blessing in disguise, though.

Daryl McMahon (ankle), Dean Rance (groin), Anthony Cook (groin) and Ben May (back) all have niggling injuries and goalkeeper Preston Edwards was forced out of Saturday’s 4-0 win over Concord with a knee problem.

Brown said: "I was giving seven of them the night off anyway because we looked a bit flat on Saturday. Some of them were on their last legs.

"Tuesday did us a favour, having the night off, to give those injuries a chance to settle down.

"We’ve played 20 games in 11 weeks, which is more than anyone else."
