Crumbling roads and paths a minefield for drivers and pedestrians

Potholes in Saddington Street, Gravesend

Is this the most potholed street in Gravesham?

A mass of cracked, broken and crumbling tarmac, drivers using Saddington Street in Gravesend are having to creep around the craters.

The junction, which links the town centre’s one-way system with The Grove, Edwin Street and Peacock Street, is one of a growing number of Gravesham streets breaking up under the strain of the cold snap.

Kent County Council has agreed to spend at least £1 million on sorting out the problems caused by the prolonged cold snap but said this week it would not be able to start a full programme of repairs until April.

KCC leader Cllr Paul Carter said: "You’ve got to do it when the weather’s right. You’ve got to wait for the frost to subside and for the water table to subside."

Repairs are being carried out ahead of the more permanent works but are being done on a 'fix and find’ approach with crews working in areas with the greatest need.

KCC has spent almost £250,000 in the last four years on compensation to people whose cars have been damaged by potholes.

Barbara Cook suffered dreadful injuries after falling on a cracked pavementThe figure paid out has increased year-on-year from £25,187.40 in 2006 to £83,903.72 last year. It remains unclear how many requests for compensation have been turned down.

And it isn’t just potholes causing a problem for residents.

One Gravesham pensioner says she is seeking compensation after tripping on a cracked pavement.

Barbara Cook was left with a number of injuries, including a cracked rib, after tripping on cracked paving slabs in Astra Drive, Gravesend.

The Pot Holes Of Peacock Street..

Well it was day one of rebuilding the road.
Lots lots of expensive work if it's only temporary.
I Hope they realize that the road drainage is blocked or collapsed.
The humps are removed but the square blocks with a trees still remain.
    Railway Bridge seem OK.

    Potholes:Is it Ice or Iceland?

The recent cold weather has made the state of our roads even worse with even more pot holes appearing. In Gravesham the roads were already in a very poor condition and have been for years due to under investment from the local council as it has only been the past few years it has been County Council responsibility.Despite how much in taxes we already pay, including road tax, fuel, council, numerous stealth taxes plus of course parking charges and associated fines the roads have degraded to those seen in third world countries. Vehicles fail an increasingly strict M.O.T yet the roads can be in any condition the authorities like!I have said for years that we do not need speed bumps as the potholes slow you down.We keep getting warned services are going to be cut but I think they already have been.If we most endure "Parking Wardens" then perhaps the serious revenues they raise should go to fix the roads.Directly or indirectly, the state of our roads comes back to central Government, the same Government who encouraged councils to invest in countries like Iceland. If only councils were operated like a business, we would have first class and efficient services and record low council tax.Still,it's only money (ours!)
