Memorial Park boot fair ended because organiser Nick Plumb lost too much money from it

A long-running car boot sale will no longer be held after its organiser said it was losing him too much money.

Just eight cars attended the last fair in the Memorial Park on Sunday, January 14, which was the first of the new year.

As a result, its organiser Nick Plumb, 56, said it would be the final one after struggling to make a profit for more than a year.

“I don’t look at the figures, if I did I’d probably cry,” he said.

“I’ve got to pay public liability insurance, the council, advertising and £15 to drive there and back from my home in Rainham, so when you add it all up it comes to a lot of money.”

Mr Plumb took charge of the weekly car boot sale in November 2016, but the number of vehicles displaying their wares has continued to steadily fall.

It has been a regular fixture in Memorial Park over the last three years and had been held in Beach Street before that for more than a decade.

“If I broke even every week down there, I’d still be doing it,” Mr Plumb added.

“I feel sorry for the people I let down because it takes away their Sunday morning.

“Everyone in Herne Bay has an opinion on how it should be run, but they don’t support it.”
