Accident on A291 Canterbury Road near Herne Common, Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance called

A 20-year-old motorcyclist has died after his bike collided with a tree.

It happened at Herne Common, Herne Bay, just after 3.30pm, on the Canterbury Road, opposite Falcon Close.

Kent Police said the man, from Medway, was pronounced dead at the scene and no other vehicles were involved. His bike was heading towards Canterbury.

Air ambulance crews rushed to the scene.

A spokesman for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance service said: "At 3.48pm today the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance were called to a road traffic accident at Herne Common, Herne Bay.

"The helicopter's doctor and paramedic assisted paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service in treating the patient who was a motorcyclist."

The A291 Canterbury Road was shut to traffic in both directions after the incident, between Curtis Wood Road and Busheyfields Road.

A witness said it had happened near the First and Last pub at Herne Common.

Stagecoach has tweeted to warn it could not run any services between Herne and Sturry.

Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or the moments leading up to it.
