Dog attack on Herne Bay seafront sparks police call and owner's promise to muzzle her Staffordshire Bull Terrier

A dog owner has agreed to muzzle her Staffordshire bull terrier after it attacked a Jack Russell on Herne Bay seafront.

Police were called after the white Staffie grabbed hold of Susan Colley’s terrified dog Bailey as she walked him between the Clock Tower and the Bandstand in Central Parade.

Ms Colley, 46, of Mortimer Street, said: “It ran right up to Bailey and attacked him. I was screaming and crying to get the dog off him. I was kicking it and hitting it with the plastic lead. It was so frightening.

“I was bitten on my hand and Bailey had a dozen scrapes and punctures and was in great pain.”

Ms Colley had a tetanus jab and took Bailey to the vets. She then called the police to report the incident.

She said: “It has caused muscle damage to Bailey, so when you pick him up you can see and feel he is in pain.

“He hasn’t been eating his food, and normally he is eager to go out, but now he hasn’t moved at all. He is in shock.”

Ms Colley added that she fears going for a walk with Bailey and encountering the dog once again.

Police spokesman Nicola Foreman said: “Kent Police was informed of an incident that occurred on 5.20pm on Wednesday, March 4, where it is alleged a Staffordshire bull terrier had attacked a Jack Russell along Central Parade, Herne Bay.

“The owner of the bull terrier was traced and spoken to by officers and the incident was dealt with by community resolution.

“The bull terrier owner has agreed that the dog is to be on a lead and muzzled at all times when in public and agreed to pay the vet fees to the victim.”
