Defender Liam Quinn gives Herne Bay manager Sam Denly a boost by agreeing to stay at the club

Herne Bay have received an eve of season boost with the news that one of their most experienced defenders is staying at the club.

Central defender Liam Quinn retains the captain’s armband after doubts surfaced he wouldn’t feature this season. Danny Walder will be vice-captain.

Bay boss Sam Denly said: “Quinny watched our pre-season friendly at Whitstable and we have been speaking since but a change at work means he is now able to commit. I always had an inkling he would sign.”

Denly is still looking to add at least one more defender to his squad.

He may decide to bring in a loan signing from a club at a higher level and is talking to both Steve Lovell, now assistant manager at Bromley, and Dartford boss Tony Burman.

Bay beat Sheppey 3-2 on Tuesday night with goals from Danny Williams, Connor Sanders and Sam Hallett. Stuart Zanone netted in the 2-1 defeat at Tilbury on Saturday.

Bay host Ashford United on Saturday in a testimonial match for long-serving Nathan Eastwood (kick-off 3pm).

The club have been drawn at home to Hastings United in the Alan Turvey Cup sponsored by Robert Dyas.
