Herne Bay boss John Embery says they can't be complacent against East Grinstead

Herne Bay will be looking to put a fragile East Grinstead side to the sword on Saturday.

The Sussex side were hammered 7-0 at home by Cray Wanderers last weekend and they’ve shipped 22 goals in their last six games.

Bay had been free-scoring until a goalless draw at home to Molesey on Saturday and joint-manager John Embery knows they can’t be complacent against the Wasps.

“Sometimes you get a backlash,” he said. “You’d like to think (the Cray result) will go in our favour but it depends on the mental character of the team.

“I don’t know them so it’s hard for me to judge but you’d like to think that will make them very brittle.

“We’ll be nice and positive against them. We’ll try to put them to the sword early, try to get an early goal and push on from there.

“With any team lacking confidence, if they go behind and they’re struggling to score goals and get points, as soon as you do that, it’s pretty much the end of them and you can get a good scoreline so that’s the approach we’ll take.”

Raphe Brown is suspended on Saturday but other than Alex Mulrooney-Skinner, who had an MRI scan on his back this week, Embery and Jermaine Darlington have no injury concerns.

Embery admitted it was “two points dropped” against Molesey but feels 11th-placed Bay are in good shape after 18 games.

He said: “We’re happy with where we are. We’re in a nice position, four points off the play-offs, we’ve got another game on Saturday which we hope we can win and then we’re right in the mix.

“We’re more than pleased. A lot of people, at the beginning of the season, were saying ‘you’ve got a team nobody knows and they’re all youngsters’ but we’ve put that to bed.

“We were pleased on Saturday because we looked defensively better. We worked on bits and pieces, brought a new lad in as well (Mohamed Kamara) and he had a very good game.

“We looked a lot more comfortable at the back, defended better and never looked like we were going to concede.

“We’ve looked like we need to score three or four to win a game but on Saturday we looked comfortable defensively the whole time.

“For us to push on this year, that’s something we needed to address and we feel we’ve addressed it already.”

Herne Bay are at home to Horsham on Tuesday
