Herne Bay manager Sam Denly is poised to make a signing ahead of home game with Horsham

Sam Denly is planning to add a new face to his squad ahead of the Ryman League, Division 1 South home game against Horsham on Saturday.

The Herne Bay boss has been working hard to strengthen his squad in recent weeks, making several enquiries and holding talks with players. He now hopes the hard work is about to pay off, while hinting another signing is close.

Denly said: “I hope to complete one signing before the weekend if everything is done in time and could be close to bringing somebody else in next week.”

Bay paid the price for defensive errors as they came from 3-1 down with 10 minutes left to earn a point at Molesey on Saturday.

Denly, assistant Gavin Theze and coach Steve Nolan have been working to try to eradicate their problems at the back but Bay conceded a goal only two minutes into the game.

Denly said: “It wasn’t an ideal position to find ourselves in but the boys showed great character and might have easily capitulated when we were struggling in our poor run a couple of months ago.”

Horsham arrive in 15th spot, four places and two points ahead of Bay, with Theze labelling the competition a “crazy league” after another mixed bag of results including Molesey’s 5-4 win against Hastings in midweek and Greenwich Borough losing at home to Whyteleafe at the weekend.

Theze said: “You just can’t call it with teams at the bottom beating those at the top. Borough and Hastings should be winning this league with the resources they have.”

Understudy goalkeeper Toby Wood turned out for Canterbury City in their 4-2 defeat at Crowborough, with Denly helping out his former coach Ben Smith (the City manager) who needed cover.

Denly said: “He rang me on Friday asking if we could help out with cover and it was a good opportunity to give Toby some game-time.”
