Herne Bay manager Sam Denly faces dilemma ahead of visit of Tooting & Mitcham in Ryman League Division 1 South

Sam Denly admits he has a few selection posers to resolve ahead of the Ryman League, Division 1 South home game against Tooting on Saturday.

The Herne Bay boss made several changes to his side for the Kent Reliance Senior Cup quarter-final tie against Dartford at Winch’s Field on Tuesday night. The Vanarama National South side won 3-0 but Denly felt the players that came in did well.

He said: “We were excellent and held our own against a side from two leagues above. The only thing we lacked was a little bit of quality in front of goal.

“I took a lot of confidence out of the game. I made five or six changes to give people who haven’t played minutes, like Dan Parkinson and Kane Phillip and they did themselves no harm at all.”

Denly was looking for a good response following the 0-0 draw at East Grinstead on Saturday.

He said: “It was a fair result but we are third in the league and if we want to stay in the top five, then we have to be better and win games like that.

“We did all right and hit the post but they had chances as well and Jack (Delo) made one great save.”

He added: "It was good to see after what happened at Tooting in the previous game and he will win us more points than he loses.”

Bay have released youngster Kane Butler this week, unable to guarantee the forward regular first team football.

Denly said: “He is a good player and we parted on good terms. He has enough ability to get into most Ryman League or Southern Counties East League sides.”

Bay and Tooting face a swift reunion, following the 1-1 draw between the sides late last month, when a mis-kick from keeper Delo gifted the south Londoners their goal.

Midfielder Lee Browning misses the game after picking up a calf strain at East Grinstead.

Denly has to check on two other injury doubts – Joe Nelder (foot) and Nathan Eastwood (back).
