Herne Bay boss Sam Denly refusing to agonise over club's contrasting home and away form

Sam Denly hailed Dan Parkinson’s winner against Ramsgate at Winch’s Field on Tuesday night as “a moment of brilliance.

The Herne Bay midfielder, signed on a season-long loan from Maidstone, netted his fourth goal for the club with 13 minutes left, converting a 25-yard free-kick into the top corner to settle the Ryman League, Division 1 South derby and push Herne Bay back into the top-six.

Boss Denly said: “We were excellent in what was a hard and physical game and probably not a great one for the spectator. It had 0-0 all over it and needed a ‘worldy’ finish – a moment of brilliance."

The win – Bay’s seventh in eight home games – followed up the 2-1 win against Corinthian Casuals on Saturday.

They top the home form table, with 21 points out of a possible 24 and are clearly enjoying playing on their own improved pitch, but have taken only two points out of a possible 18 on the road.

However, Denly is refusing to agonise over the contrasting records.

He said: “We have been poor away from home, had we done better we would be right up there. We haven’t started games well enough but there is no real reason for it because we prepare in the same way. It is something we are addressing.

Meanwhile, Bay’s injury problems are easing, with Danny Walder given a chance of being involved at Tooting on Saturday after several weeks out with a strained knee ligament.

Sam Hasler (knee) could return for the Robert Dyas League Cup tie at Whitstable next Tuesday (7.45pm) but Ben Brown (heel) and Nathan Eastwood (ankle) are still out.
