Young players have shone for Herne Bay

Joint-boss John Embery says the future is looking bright for Herne Bay.

Bay sit in 12th place with one match left to play of this Bostik South season, against third place Greenwich Borough on Saturday.

Their largely young side have kept up with some of the best teams in the league and beat play-off hopefuls Corinthian-Casuals 3-1 last weekend.

Embery said: “Sam McCallum scored his first goal and he took it really well. Everyone was excellent on the day and we more than deserved it.

“The goal scorers on Saturday were 17, 18 and 19 so things are looking bright for the future.

“They all feel they can win the league next season or at the very least get in the play-offs. It will be about being consistent next year.

“If we turn up we will win. If we have the right attitude, as we keep saying to the players, we will do well.

“When we play against some of the lesser teams in this league they sometimes think it will be easy and come unstuck.”

One player who has shone through this year is 18-year-old Jake Embery who has scored 25 goals in 50 games in all competitions.

John Embery said: “Any opportunity he gets he will finish and his movement is second to none. It is a great return for such a young player.

“He was 17 when the season started and has now played 50 games in the league and cup.”

Connor Wilkins, Sam McCallum and Jake Embery were all on the scoresheet in their 3-1 win at Corinthian-Casuals and the win was what they deserved.

John Embery added: “We played really well and it just shows what a bit of a break can do. We had players back available and rested.

“There were four days of rest and it made a big difference.

“It was a very good game and we could have won it by more. Both sides hit the post as well and it was a good game for the spectators.

“Their pitch was very nice as well and we managed to get the ball down and play.”
