Herne Bay boss Sam Denly still looking to add to his squad as new Ryman League Division 1 season beckons

Sam Denly has made Darren Marsden his second summer signing.

The Herne Bay boss confirmed his return for a second spell at the club after the 2-1 pre-season friendly win at his former club Whitstable on Tuesday night

Marsden finished last season with Sheppey United – who visit Winch’s Field on Tuesday (7.45pm) – helping them lift the Kent Senior Trophy against another of his ex-clubs Ashford United and win promotion to the Southern Counties East League Premier Division. He also had a spell at Hythe.

Bay boss Denly said: “Darren is a quality player. He has had a few clubs but I want him to settle here.

“He has been our stand-out player against Whitstable and at Leatherhead (Bay losing 4-0) on Saturday. He makes things happen and scores goals.”

Fellow new signing Stuart Zanone scored his first goal for the club at Belmont on Tuesday after former Bay keeper Dan Eason had kept out Danny Walder’s first-half penalty.

Stuart King levelled for the Oystermen against his old club, before Sam Hasler put Joe Nelder in for the winner as Bay completed their first pre-season win.

Denly said: “It was a much better performance after two disappointing results against Margate and Leatherhead, we looked more like a Ryman League side.”

While pleased to have Zanone and Marsden on board, Denly is still looking to add to his squad.

He said: “I am speaking to a few others. We look good going forward but I would like to strengthen up at the back.”

Denly also confirmed that centre-back Dan Johnson is joining Vanarama National League Bromley.

Bay travel to Ryman League North side Tilbury on Saturday (3pm).
