It is understood the owner escaped unharmed.

The spokesman said: "Police attendance was not required and the owner arranged for the vehicle to be recovered."

A Shepway District Council spokesman said: "One of our grounds staff who work on the canal spotted this car in the canal on Burmarsh Road this morning.

"We informed the police and gave them as many details as we could.

"We will not be recovering the car ourselves but we believe the owner is aware and may be making his own arrangements."
