Hythe Town manager Clive Cook says weekend of big games in Ryman League Division 1 should make promotion picture cleared

Clive Cook says the promotion picture should become a bit clearer by the end of Ryman League, Division 1 South’s ‘Super Saturday’.

On a mouthwatering day of fixtures, fourth-placed Hythe face play-off chasing Hastings at Pilot Field, having seen Tuesday’s scheduled game against the same opponents at Reachfields postponed due to fog.

Elsewhere, leaders Tooting & Mitcham host third-placed Greenwich Borough and Dorking, in second place, entertain Lewes, outside the play-offs on goal difference alone.

Just 12 points separate the top eight sides with the likes of Hastings, South Park and Faversham lurking in the chasing pack with games in hand,

Cook said: “I’m sure Saturday will sort things out a bit. Of course every manager will tell you he wants three points but I think it’s just important if we can get through this week without losing. I hate to lose.

“I think there are 11 teams still in the fight for promotion.”

Although they have a 10-point gap to close, Cook fully expects Saturday’s hosts Hastings (3pm) to be in the fight for the play-off places come April, given that they have up to four games in hand on the sides above them.

Despite taking four points from four games at the turn of the year, Town are still fourth, seven points off top spot and shrugged off their blip with 6-1 and 8-1 wins in their last two games at Reachfields.

Cook added: “There will be more blips to come, for every team, I’m sure. All 24 teams can beat each other. It’s such an intriguing and weird season.”

Saturday’s postponed game at Greenwich has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 21, and Cook said: “We don’t want any more pressure on ourselves than necessary, so it’ll be good to get that game played sooner rather than having it later in the season when it could be even bigger.”

He added: “We had a few injuries this week so having a few days off has helped clear those up. We were a bit disappointed not to be able to carry on where we left off (in the 8-1 against Guernsey last Tuesday) but all the games were off, so it’s one of those things.”

Cook was hoping to tie up a deal for Faversham midfielder Kieron Campbell this week and added: “With Owen Price (signed last week from Chatham) and Kieron, it takes us to a 17-man squad with a couple out on dual registration.

“That should be all right for us for the rest of the season.”
