Ashford Borough Councillors expected to approve plans for 660 homes on former Powergen site off Victoria Way in Ashford

Councillors are expected to approve a development for 660 new homes, shared public spaces and a cafe in the centre of Ashford.

Developers U+I, based in London, and Quinn Estates, based in Canterbury, submitted plans for a mix of flats and houses built on three parcels of empty land off Victoria Road, on the former Powergen site.

The proposals will be discussed at an Ashford Borough Council (ABC) planning meeting next Wednesday (June 15) where members are expected to give the green light.

The homes would consist of one, two, and three-bedroom flats, plus 25 houses, with two-thirds of them expected to be rented.

Permission for the hybrid planning application would require the scheme to be built in two phases.

Approval also requires the developers agreeing to contribute more than half a million pound of section 106 funding for community projects.

This includes £275,000 towards KCC education provision, £270,000 toward public realm/open space improvements in Victoria Park and £5,000 towards parking controls/measures in neighbouring residential streets.

Plans to transform the wasteland, close to Ashford International railway station, were first revealed in October last year at two public consultations.

The land involved is known as the Powergen (now E.ON) site as it was occupied by the firm in the 1990s.
