Barclays bank in Gillingham High Street will close in February 2015

Barclays is closing its Gillingham branch, it has been confirmed today.

A Barclays spokesman said: “In response to this change in customer behaviour we must evolve our business to meet their needs.

At Barclays in Gillingham customer usage is declining and around 60% of customers regularly use alternative branches, which is why we have taken the difficult decision to close the branch."

Staff have been consulted about the changes and will be transfered to other branches nearby.

Barclays have said that as well as online, telephone and mobile banking customers can also use Post Offices for everyday transactions. The closest of which is on Gillingham High street.

The spokesman said: "We hope the range of alternatives including digital banking, nearby branches and Post Office access will help to ease the transition for our customers in Gillingham and if any customers have any concerns we would recommend they speak to a member of staff."

Barclays closed its Rochester branch in September 2013. Branches remain open in Rainham and Chatham.
