Brexit to blame as popular products including Marmite, Surf, Dove, Comfort, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream disappear from shelves

The sharp fall in the value of the pound has been blamed for a pricing dispute that has seen popular products disappear from supermarket shelves.

Retail giant Tesco is locked in dispute with Unilever, a major supplier that produces some of Britain's best-known brands.

The argument centres on the supplier raising prices to compensate for the massive fall in the pound since PM Theresa May indicated the UK could be headed for a hard Brexit, which will see the country leave the single market.

The supplier has halted deliveries to Tesco as a result of the row, and supplies of several popular household brands are now running low.

Affected brands include Pot Noodle, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, Helmann’s, Elmlea, Colman’s, Marmite, Flora, Comfort, Persil, Comfort, Surf, and Dove.

The pound currently stands at $1.22 following a precipitous fall over the last few days.
