Cripps new partner to target controversial non-doms

A lawyer whose clients include entertainers and sports stars has joined a law firm as it aims to attract work from controversial non-doms.

David Semmens has become a partner in the private client team of Tunbridge Wells-based Cripps.

His expertise covers tax planning and administering the UK estates of overseas domiciled clients, as well as wills and trusts.

Non-doms have been the focus of government legislation this year as ministers try to clamp down on complex measures used by British people who base themselves abroad to reduce their tax bills.

Myles McIntosh, head of Cripps’ private client division, said: “David’s appointment further strengthens our offering to both UK and international clients.

“He is a great addition to our growing team and helps to reinforce our first class reputation across the country.”

Mr Semmens, who lives in Tunbridge Wells, has previously worked at several London law firms, including Gordon Dadds.

His clients include entrepreneurs and business people, entertainers, sports individuals and other professionals.

He also acts for UK ex-pats living in Europe (mainly Switzerland) and the USA.

He said: “I am delighted to have joined Cripps which has one of the largest and most highly regarded private client practices in the South East.

“I look forward to being able to continue to serve my existing client base and to contribute to the firm’s strategic growth plans.”

Cripps also has an office in Kings Hill and employs more than 350 people.
