Poundworld confirms Chatham store will close

Discount retailer Poundworld has confirmed another of its stores in Kent is to shut.

The struggling chain, which has already confirmed more than 100 closures has now revealed another 40 will shut for good.

It means more than 1,800 staff will now lose their jobs.

Last week it was confirmed the Canterbury branch would close this weekend.

Now the Chatham branch will follow it - with the loss of 13 jobs.

It will leave the company, which has faced an uncertain future after takeover talks collapsed, with 190 stores left operating nationwide, following the 145 closures.

So far, its other Kent outlets in Strood, Dartford and its Bargain Buys shop in Gravesend will continue to operate as normal.

However, it is feared unless administrators Deloitte can find a buyer for at least some of the estate, it will soon topple completely.
