Nathan Charles from Sheerness becomes 700th apprentice hired through Kent Employment Programme after showing eye for detail in application letter

Nineteen-year-old Nathan Charles secured an apprenticeship in a travel company by writing an eye-catching application.

The teenager from Sheerness was able to impress his new boss at Spirit of Remembrance with careful attention to detail in his application letter.

In getting a job, he became the 700th apprentice to be placed through the KCC’s Kent Employment Programme – which targets young people who have been on the dole for at least three months.

Spirit of Remembrance managing director Nikki Archer-Waring said: “We had been looking for an apprentice for nearly a year so when we received Nathan’s application we were thrilled to see his enthusiasm shine through in it.

“So far, we are really pleased with Nathan and how he has picked the job up so quickly. He is already processing bookings and payments and will be going to a travel show in November.”

The company, based in Upchurch near Rainham, organises bespoke tours around the world for people with an interest in the world wars.

It gave Mr Charles an opportunity to combine work with his interest in history. He is studying for a Level 2 Business Administration through work based training.

He said: “I am really enjoying it. It is different every day, you never do the same thing. I really enjoyed history at school so I am finding this so interesting.”

The Kent Employment Programme is designed to get young people aged from 16 to 24 back into work if they have been claiming job-seekers allowance for at least three months.
