Former worker at Sheerness steel mill Robert Gray organised a reunion at the Albion pub in Blue Town

Dozens of former steel workers enjoyed a reunion at the weekend.

Organiser Robert Gray, of High Street, Blue Town, thought it was a good time to catch up with old colleagues.

The 59-year-old worked in the metal shop at the site for 12 years when it was Sheerness Steel.

He left about 15 years ago and is now employed by Kent County Council at its recycling depot off Bridge Road, Sheerness.

The reunion, which was for former mill staff of any era, took place at the Albion pub, High Street, Blue Town, on Saturday.

About 40 people went along to talk about days gone by and relive their time at the plant.

Thamesteel, in Brielle Way, Sheerness, closed in January 2012 and 350 staff were made redundant without receiving their month’s wages.

Since then there has been no firm news about what will happen to it, although recently there have been talks about the rolling mill side of the plant reopening.

Mr Gray thanked everyone who went along and said: “It was a really good night and we had a lot of fun.

“The atmosphere was very good. We all said it’s very sad to see the mill rotting away now though.”
